GERAM V1.6 VOTE BY 15 MAY PLEASE
Members of the IFIP-IFAC Task Force on Enterprise Integration
=============================================================
Dear Colleagues,
BACKGROUND
==========
You will recall my request to review GERAM Version 1.5 and version N405 so that
we can produce GERAM Version 1.6 which can then be endorsed by the Task Force,
and be included as an Annex to the GERAM Requirements standard ISO WD 15704
developed by the ISO TC184 SC5 WG1.
Every member of the Task Force had the chance to voice their opinions and indeed
many people contributed valuable ideas to the discussion list
geram@cit.gu.edu.au as well as raised valid questions that needed answering.
Two weeks of detailed editing work was needed to produce a document which I
believe reflects most proposals. As is usual in such cases compromises were
necessary, but hopefully these are acceptable to all.
GERAM V1.6 IS PROPOSED AS ANNEX to ISO WD 15704
===============================================
GERAM V1.6 is now proposed for your endorsement. Because of the size of the
document it is not attached to this mail, but can be downloaded either as a
zipped Word6 file or read through a WWW browser (geramv1_6.html). Please visit
on the World Wide Web:
http://www.cit.gu.edu.au/~bernus/taskforce/geram/versions/geram1-6/
You will find there GERAM V1.6.0 and the explanations of the rationale of the
revisions. The Word file contains revisions in blue and comments in yellow which
explain the rationale for these revisions.
(To download the word documents you will have to use login "taskforce" password
"@GERAM") when prompted
PLEASE VOTE BY 15 MAY 1998 (or 12th if possible)
================================================
PLEASE SEND YOUR VOTE BY 15 MAY TO
bernus@cit.gu.edu.au
ON WHETHER YOU AGREE with submitting GERAM V1.6 as the Task Force official
version to ISO. Should you have disagreement please do not send just a "no",
but say which paragraph should be changed to what new text, or where you wish to
insert a new paragraph and mail it to me.
Please do NOT broadcast your vote to the wg5-12-list -- that would clutter the
list, just sent it to bernus@cit.gu.edu.au and I shall summarise after 15 May.
Votes close on 15 May, so you have 10 days for a final check. However may I ask
you to cast your vote before the 12th May if possible; I realise that for many
this is too close a deadline but if you could do that then the ISO TC184 SC5 WG1
meeting (11-13 May) in Paris could already be notified of the result.
RATIONALE
=========
Please consider the historic aspect of this document; this is the result of
almost nine years of the Task Force work and as such will never be a 100%
complete -- as we move forward so will the field of Enterprise Integration. I
believe the usefulness of the present Version 1.6 should be measured in that
perspective. No doubt there will be interpretations and explanations later and
ultimately extensions or modifications, but they should in my view come after
industry and academia have tested these concepts and provided feedback. I hope
that the Task Force will be able to endorse this document as the first public
presentation of GERAM.
The document has a document history included, listing all previous editors.
When publishing GERAM V1.6 we shall follow a similar way of acknowledging
individual contributions as well as editors as was done in the first and second
triennial reports of the Task Force.
I would like to thank all those members who have been able to contribute to
these discussions and helped make the Task Force definition of GERAM a truly
international joint effort. To those who were unable to contribute actively but
observed from the side-line, so to speak, I thank for their support in reviewing
and voting on the document; your endorsement is vital to make the effort a
believable result.
thank you very much and looking forward to your replies
Peter Bernus
