This course builds on the foundational understanding
of the nature, design and development of interactive multimedia gained
within Introduction to Multimedia. Rather than the broad multimedia context
adopted in Introduction to Multimedia, the knowledge and skills developed
in this course relate specifically to the World Wide Web. Thus, this course
aims to equip students with both practical knowledge of tools (HTML, DHTML,CSS,
JavaScript, XHTML) and conceptual knowledge required to design, produce
and evaluate Web-based multimedia works. |
Upon completing this course students will
1. Consider the evolution of the World Wide Web and its current and future role
in society,
2. Understand the specific design requirements of Websites and individual HTML
pages related to various delivery contexts and platforms
3. Understand the concepts of Usability and Accessibility as they apply to Websites
4. Be able to critically review and evaluate existing websites in order to explore
general site and page design, usability and accessibility issues and considerations
5. Apply knowledge and understanding of site and page design, usability and
accessibility to guide their own product design
6. Develop knowledge of HTML syntax and tags and be able to interpret, modify
and write original scripts in order to achieve desired content, functionality
and layout.
7. Develop a basic knowledge of XHTML
8. Develop knowledge of the capabilities and syntax of JavaScript and be able
to interpret, modify and write original scripts to perform specific functions
within HTML pages
9. Understand the purpose of CSS and the elements for producing effective CSS
10. Develop a basic knowledge of DHTML
11. Acquire a fundamental understanding of strategies for maximising search
engine visibility
12. Apply and integrate knowledge of technical aspects (CSS, HTML, XHTML,JavasScript,search
engine visibility) and of design concepts (general and specific site and page
design elements, accessibility and usability) in order to produce a website
with a specific purpose aimed at a specific target audience.
