P1 2011-2: Classes

Lectures

There are two hours of lecture time per week. In lectures we will guide students through the requirements of the course, describe programming environments, and show you how to program and solve problems.

There will be some quizzes during lecture time to test your learning. These quizzes are an important part of the assessment of the course. The lectures at which the quizzes are to be held are indicated on the semester calendar.

We expect students to attend all lectures on their campus.

Laboratories

There are two hours of laboratory time per week. Mostly you will be putting the lecture material into practice by solving programming problems.

Laboratory exercises are the biggest part of assessment for the course.

We expect students to attend their laboratory class every week, starting from week 2.

Workshops

A one-hour workshop every week is an opportunity to discuss more examples and help prepare you for the assessment items.

We expect students to attend all workshops on their campus.

Common times

Lectures, workshops and laboratories can be busy times, and it's not always possible to answer all your questions in the available time. Common times are informal classes where a member of the teaching team will be able to give you individual help or do extra more interesting things related to the course.

Common times are different to other classes. We don't expect all students to attend all of them. If you feel you need help, advice, encouragement, tougher problems, or just to say hi, then come to any of them.

If you have been ill and missed a quiz or laboratory exercise, your campus convenor may permit you to catch it up at a common time. See these instructions.

You may have been required to enroll in a specific common time, but even so, you may attend any of them.

It is OK if you have a timetable clash with one of these common times, but if you have clashes with all of them, that would be problematic.
