Creating and installing a Xface for your mail. 1/ Create a face in the form of a 48x48 X bitmap. NOTE: this should be an actual face and NOT just a logo. 2/ use the script http://www.cit.gu.edu.au/~anthony/icons/support/scripts/xbm2face to convert this into a compressed face file. This script assumes that the pbmplus filters the "compface" executable is on your path. The program will complain if this is not the case. 4/ Save the output as a ".face" file in your home directory. XMail or ExMH (and many other mail client programs), will now automatically add a face to any mail it sends. WARNING: Do not leave any blank lines in the .face file and all lines MUST start with either a SPACE or TAB. This stipulation is for sendmail to denote a line continuation in mail headers. All white space is ignored by the face decoding routines, so you can break or join lines anywhere as long as the above holds true. 5/ For mail clients that do not automatically add the mail face.. Prepend the string "X-Face: " to the contents of ".face" and add it to the headers of outgoing mail. I myself use a special outgoing mail filter to add the face and random (or selected) signitures to all my outgoing mail. Anthony Thyssen 13 March 1996
