------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Robes and Monks Robes are special... basically, they partially negate the penalty for wearing a suit of metallic armor, or give you a bonus to spellcasting if you're not wearing such a suit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why riding a pet is good... The doors problem goes away once you own a key or some such device. Steeds better your carrying capacity, they draw occasional hits from, and deal occasional hits to, monsters, and they help increase your own damage versus monsters. In a pinch you can kick them and gallop away from nasties - just remember that you use your own speed when moving one square at a time, so use some multiple movement command for this. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Determining Hungriness The #chat command can also be used to determine if certain types of pets are hungry. Unfortunately this is more limited for horses than for cats and dogs. According to the source (sound.c) this depends simply on the type of sound they make. For pets that purr and bark (cats and canines) there are three levels: barks, purrs -> not hungry yips, miaos -> will be hungry within the next 1000 moves growls, mews -> hungry and a tameness of five or better whines, yowls -> hungry and tameness less than five For pets that neigh (horses and unicorns) there are only two levels: whickers -> not hungry whinnies -> hungry and a tameness of five or better neighs -> hungry and a tameness less than five For all other monster pets you get no information about hungriness by chatting. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
